Energy- and Resource-Efficient Computing

Research question

Earlier computing research addressed numerical precision, platform energy, interference measurement, and design-space exploration through specialized methods and experiments. This thread preserves those contributions alongside later measurements of energy and execution costs for on-device AI.

Contributions over time

  1. 2000–2009

    Fixed-point and wordlength optimization

Sensitivity-guided wordlength search trades numerical output error against implementation complexity. Related work reduces data wordlength in DSP software and automates floating-point to fixed-point transformation. A later book collects this signal-processing work.

  2. 2008

    Identifying interconnect interference

A bicoherence-based measurement study identifies high-speed digital interconnects in platform radio-frequency emissions.

    Han et al., ICCDCS 2008

  3. 2009–2013

    Low-power display subsystems

Checksum-based image-change detection reduces display traffic for low-motion content. A separate hybrid DRAM and phase-change-memory frame buffer exploits read-dominant content; related work studies adaptive touch sampling.

  4. 2015–2016

    Collaborative power and quality modeling

Collaborative CAD work develops learning-based models of black-box hardware power, a polyhedral-based SystemC flow for low-power design-space exploration, and statistical models of approximate-hardware quality.

  5. 2023–2026

Energy and latency of on-device AI

Later work measures and predicts AI energy on edge devices, profiles on-device language-model latency, and uses energy predictors in neural-architecture search.
